- Test your alarm system periodically. C & H Security recommends at least monthly.
- Arm your alarm system whenever you leave the home and when you go to bed at night. Make sure all doors and windows are locked.
- Have a friend or neighbor pick up your mail and newspapers when you leave your home unattended.
- Leave a light on at night when you go to bed. Lighting is a deterrent to intruders. A television or radio used with a timer also makes a good deterrent.
- Windows and doors should be secured with latches and dead bolt locks. You should also check your locks periodically for signs of tampering.
- Use a peephole or chain when answering your door. Don't let anyone you are not expecting into your home. If a person claims they are a utility employee seek verification through the company they are representing before letting them in.
- Make sure you replace the batteries in your smoke and carbon dioxide detectors annually. A good time for this is when you change your clock settings in the spring and fall.
- Don't leave a key outside your home even if you think it's well hidden. Instead leave a key with a trusted neighbor or friend.
